It is represented by a forest ecosystem, which is periodically flooded by tidal action and comprises the largest and most important mangrove forests in Costa Rica.
It is immensely prolific in vegetation, the most important flora being made up of hydrophytic species whose life cycles must be carried out in association with the aquatic environment. In addition, it has a wide variety of fauna associated with wetlands, serving as a feeding, reproduction and refuge site for a large number of wildlife species, both marine and continental, such as mollusks, fish, waterfowl, and mammals. In this area there are sites of archaeological interest. It was inhabited by indigenous people 300 years BC. In this area there are mysterious spheres carved in stone of more than two meters in diameter; as well as a variety of decorated ceramics, and gold objects, all of which constitute part of the country's archaeological wealth.
