La Leona Waterfall

Hidden amidst the rocky mountains created by the eruptions of the giant Rincón De La Vieja, the largest volcano in Costa Rica, you can find the beautiful Rio Blanco, which carves its way through the Curubande canyons. The volcanic minerals floating in the river create an optical illusion when the sun reflects on the water, generating a stunning celestial blue color. We walk amidst these breathtaking views of the canyons and the river, swim, and climb through the rocks of this beautiful place until we reach the hidden waterfall nestled within the canyons. Along the way, our bilingual and certified guides will provide you with plenty of extra information. You can't miss it!

Important information

As for footwear, we recommend closed shoes with thick soles to comfortably navigate rocky terrain. While water shoes are acceptable, some with thin soles can pose challenges, especially on the return trip over rougher terrain. Specialized walking water shoes are ideal for La Leona. Additionally, wear light, quick-drying clothing appropriate for physical activity, and consider bringing a change of clothes due to the heaviness of the water due to sulfur exposure.

Attention

The hike to La Leona Waterfall is considered moderate and requires significant physical effort due to the up and down sections. While not too strenuous for a healthy person, those with knee, ankle or foot problems may find the terrain challenging.

It is worth noting that children as young as 4 years old and adults up to 80 years old have successfully completed the walk, the elderly with a lot of effort that is. If you are in good health and even if you are between 60 and 70 years old, you should not encounter any major difficulties unless you have specific problems with some part of your legs.

Prepare to cross the river several times, and some crossings involve swimming. If you are not a good swimmer, our guides will help you in the water. Rest assured, no one will be left behind and we are committed to ensuring everyone completes the walk, even if it extends into the day.
